November 17, 2023SEAPIL Convening for Focal Points 2023
December 19, 2023What is access to justice? With the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on going, how do the governments in Southeast Asia respond to control and abate the spread of the virus? Do these government measures affect peoples’ access to justice? Are people aware of existing legal frameworks or policies that may either help or impose difficulties upon them? Who oversees governments and who ensures stakeholders are protected?
These and more questions are intended to be answered in this compilation of monitoring reports submitted by Southeast Asian Public Interest Lawyers Network (SEAPIL) members designated as persons-in-charge of information in seven (7) Southeast Asian countries.
However, this compilation does not purpose to be a comprehensive study of the situation of access to justice in Southeast Asia Its aims are modest: to provide a picture of the condition of access to justice in the region as it is impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be shown here through the eyes of SEAPIL members who are active in access to justice initiatives in their own countries. It is hoped that this monitoring report incites conversation among SEAPIL members and entices a more thorough assessment of access to justice in the region.
